Weekend at Blue Mountain during Winter

I spend a weekend at Blue Mountain with my boyfriend during February 2018. I had been to Blue Mountain for a couple times before, but I was not a good skier back then. This time, I have been skiing for a while and I wish I could ski the blue runs with ease.

I packed my ski gears (which cost me a lot of money) and a swimsuit for the spa.

Things to Do

Where to Stay for a Weekend at Blue Mountain

We stayed at an Airbnb place in Thornbury, which is 20 minutes drive from the resort. It is about $80, pretty cheap compared to the hotel in the resort. If you want to book an Airbnb, you might need to book 1 month in advance during busy ski season.

There are some hostels to consider in the area. However, you still need to call in and book in advance during busy ski season.

Where to Eat for a Weekend at Blue Mountain

Thornburi Thai Food

We had lunch at Thornburi Thai Food. This place is had to find because it is inside Blue Mountain Spring Lodge.

Thai Pad

This place was recommended by locals at Airbnb; however, I was a bit disappointed when we try the food here. It had good service and nice environment. The food was a bit pricey, the taste was average, and the portion was small.

Some reviews said it is a hidden gem. It was pretty hidden, but I would not call it a gem.

Afterall, the food choice at Blue Mountain is very limited. It is either this or fries and burgers. If you are a bit tired of cafeteria fast food, you could give this place a try.

Itinerary for Weekend at Blue Moutain

Day 1

Ski at Blue Mountain Ski and Snow Resort

What you need to bring to ski:

  • ski gears (or get the rental at the resort)
  • ski pants or waterproof pants, recommend wearing 2 layers
  • ski gloves, or thick leather gloves
  • food (food at the resort is unhealthy and expensive)

We aim to get up early around 7 and get to Blue Mountain around 9. However, we got up at 9, get to Blue Moutain around noon, had some trouble finding parking and finally start to ski around 1.

We found parking space at Blue Mountain P1 parking lot on the south side. I am glad we parked at South Side it had fewer people and shorter lineups.

Even though we started late, but we got so tired after 5-6 hours, I could barely turn at the end. We spent the whole day at the ski resort and finished around 9 pm.

Alternative Plan: Cross-country ski or snowshoe at Scenic Cave

If you are not into the downhill ski, you could try cross-country ski or snowshoe at Scenic Cave right beside Blue Mountain.

Day 2

Scandinave Spa

What you need to bring:

  • swimsuit
  • flip-flop
  • bathrobe (optional, you could choose to rent at the spa)

Today we got up on time around 8 and went Scandinave Spa. The spa opened at 9 AM and we got there around 8:45, and there is already a lineup. The  Scandinave Spa is super busy over the weekend, and the wait time is long. My tip is getting there super early so you could get in for sure; otherwise, you might end up waiting for hours.

The bath at the spa is first-come-first-serve. I don’t think it allows reservation unless you need to have a massage.

I would recommend staying at least for 4 hours to fully relax and get the value back. The entry fee is about $60. It is for kids since all guests must be 19+.

It provided us an option to rent bathrobes, but it also provided free towel, so you did not choose to rent it.

It also provided shampoo, body wash, lotion, and hairdryer.

I highly recommend this place, especially after a day of skiing, I felt so good afterward.

Woodview Mountain Top Skating

I was super excited when I saw this skating trail opened online. After we came here, I was a bit disappointed because it is not as exciting as I imagined. Maybe we were just tired that day.

This place is not easy to find, either. To get to the trail, you need to walk 250m from the parking lot. It is not cheap either, about $20 per person for 2 hours only. However, we are done just in 1 hour. The trail is about 1 km, so it does not take me long to do a loop.

Probably because I skated at Rideau Canal in Ottawa before, and this skating trail is nothing compared the 7.8 km long Rideau Canal trial.

The place is near the top of the ski chairlift. Nevertheless, the day was foggy as well that I could not tell I was skating on the mountaintop.

It is good to try it once; however, I would not come back again.

Here are my 2 days itinerary at Blue Mountain. To summarize: to spend 1 full day ski and spend 1 full day at the spa.

Blue Mountain in winter is definitely fun to visit. Be sure to dress warmly!
